I haven’t blogged in MONTHS. But thought this would be a fun post to come back into the world of blogging on and mention that…
CURTIS AND I ARE ENGAGED.
And actually, we’ve been engaged since mid-November (haha oops). I’ve just been so out of the routine of writing that I just didn’t say anything about it but have been encouraged by a couple people to write down the whole experience, while it’s still fresh. Which, I do think is a great idea!
So, let me preface. For those that I do not know personally, or who just don’t know our backstory, Curtis and I met in college because I sent him a random friend request on Facebook in the spring of 2015. We have been dating since the summer of 2015 – so when we got engaged we had been dating nearly 3.5 years.
The morning of November 17 started like any normal Saturday morning. I woke up and texted back and forth with Curtis before he headed off to work for the morning about what we’d do when he got off. He suggested taking some photos since he’d be all dressed up for work – to which I responded “boooo I was hoping to stay in my pjs all day. You sure I can’t take pictures wearing this?” and sent him this photo (LOL GUYS):
He then went off to work. I (thankfully!) decided to shower, change into something a little less shapeless and put a little makeup on. My mom and sisters and I had made plans to go get our nails done a little later in the morning, so I definitely wasn’t dressed UP by any means, just enough to leave the house comfortably.
We left for our fun gals adventure, got our nails done, drank some wine at 11 am – not a typical thing for me by any means and actually lead unfortunately to a rough afternoon haha. My mom then took me to grab a little lunch from Whole Foods – my favorite! As we were at lunch, I was struggling with the alcohol and no-food mixture happening in my body, it was very unpleasant and actually left me feeling pretty sick to my stomach. I overcompensated a bit by trying to eat a bunch to help balance it out but that actually only made things worse.
By the time we made it back home, Curtis had actually beaten us there. He typically comes over on Saturdays after work, so that wasn’t anything unusual but nearly immediately after we got home he was like, “are you ready to go take some pictures?!” And I’m just groaning as my stomach is trying to handle all I’ve thrown at it in the last couple of hours.
I asked if we could wait a little while and sat down. He sat with me again for only a few minutes before he was like “okay, how about now??” I, oblivious to anything other than normal day happenings going on eventually just asked if he’d hate me if I went and laid down. To which my sweet boy, typically so accommodating and laid-back, turned to look at me and then just turned back toward the TV, without answering the question – which ya’ll 100% confused the heck outta me but I still didn’t suspect anything. So with that non-answer I was like, apparently that would not be okay…so I took some medicine to calm my stomach and I very reluctantly left the house.
I feel I should add in – as we tell this story, Curtis always mentions that when I asked him if I could go lay down, he didn’t even realize he hadn’t responded to me, he just went into automatic panic mode thinking “am I going to just have to propose while she’s laying sick in bed?!”
We drove out to West Nashville, the entire drive I was a bit upset about the fact that he made me leave when I clearly felt so bad haha so we didn’t talk much – which in hindsight, for his sake, was probably for the best. He stopped at his favorite coffee shop on that side of town. I stayed in the car, trying to settle my stomach after the car ride. After he got his coffee, he ran back out and asked if I wanted to go for a little walk around the park nearby – the park we actually walked around on our first date. I told him “no, not really” LOL. But, after a few more attempts to convince me to get up, I did – under the promise that it wouldn’t be a long walk.
10 minutes later we were still walking and my body wasn’t feeling it so I went and plopped down on the nearest bench to wait until I felt better – at least to be able to make the walk back to the car. Completely unbeknownst to me, we were sitting about 50 feet from where my sisters had set up a nice picnic (complete with tacos + chips and guac – also a nod to our first date!) for us to enjoy post-engagement. After we sat for about 5 minutes, I asked if we could go back to the car – haha man, I did not make this easy for him – to which he just insisted we walk a liiiiiittlle bit further. I was like, “why?? There’s nothing over there! The path ends in like 50 feet and then there’s a parking lot??” He again somehow talked me into walking that little extra bit.
We walked a little further up the path and over to where my sisters had set the picnic up and I went and sat on the bench under the tree where we also sat the night of our first date – which apparently wasn’t a part of the plan either. They had wanted to capture my face when he got down on one knee but when I sat down I unknowingly was actually facing away from our friend who was taking photos. So, Curtis had to run around where he had been positioned to get in front of where I was sitting to then get down on one knee and propose.
He asked and my literal response was “Oh man!” It’s funny how in those moments words just completely escape you and the reality of what is happening smacks you so hard in the face haha. But I obviously said yes and then we took a few quick engagement photos and ate our tacos (well, he did, I ate 2 crackers because I was still focusing on not throwing up – unfortunately not from excitement). We then just sat and talked and dreamed and prayed about our future together and it was honestly so sweet. He had also written me a 3 page note – that was framed that you can see a photo of below…which is something I will truly keep forever. So special.
We then packed up, drove back to my home and spent the remainder of the evening at home with my family – once we were home we called his family and a few friends but for most of the weekend it was just our little secret and honestly, I loved that.
All that to say, we are now waist-deep in the world of wedding planning, something simultaneously so exciting yet so overwhelming so I probably will still continue to only post on the blog every few months because there is a heck of a lot happening in my life. That said, I do miss writing in this little space, so I promise, I’ll try to do a better job of posting here more often!
